| ’67-’17 Scholarship
The ’67-’17 Scholarship was started by Tech High School’s class of 1967 to provide support to a student who has excelled in their time at Tech and taken advantage of the many opportunities offered by the school. As the class of ’67 has gotten wiser, the class of 2017, 50 years later, has committed to maintaining the scholarship and continuing it in the same vein. It is maintained by former students who feel they owe much to Tech from their time and want to give back to support future graduating classes. The scholarship is given yearly to a Tech student who has demonstrated academic or extracurricular excellence and plans to attend any form of post-secondary education.

The District 742 Local Education & Activities Foundation (LEAF) was founded in 1993 as a fully independent, non-profit organization for the purpose of promoting and enhancing school-based, extra-curricular activities and educational opportunities in District 742 Public Schools. LEAF’s endowment fund provides supplemental funding for academics, activities, arts and athletics in the district’s schools.
Effective July 1, 2009, LEAF has established a second fund, the Academic Opportunities & Enhancement Fund, which will provide academic grants to District 742’s educational program. The Academic Opportunities & Enhancement Fund will make grants to a variety of educational efforts, including projects that remove barriers to learning, creative curricular ideas to challenge students, innovative teaching ideas, projects with a student achievement focus, pursuit of excellence projects for/by staff in District 742 schools, and a variety of other ideas or projects submitted by teachers or other District staff. Annual Reports
Dear Friends of the Local Education & Activities Foundation (LEAF),
As a non-profit, LEAF strives to help District 742 meet the needs of its students. Changing times and changing needs have caused us to change and grow.
LEAF was founded in 1993 as an activities foundation, recognizing extracurricular activities are a vital component of education and student success. Our purpose was to raise money to help maintain activities, and we gave our first grants to District 742 in 1996.
In 2009, LEAF accepted the challenge of providing supplemental funding for academic programs. We created the Academic Enrichment and Opportunity Fund, to enhance curricular and classroom opportunities for our students, and our first academic grant was awarded in 2010. Since 2010, LEAF has grown and adapted to meet the changing needs of the District.
Thank you to all our supporters! YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

If it wasn’t for the Adopt a Classroom many students would not have gotten the resources to increase their engagement and achievement. My students made huge gains in their learning and I feel that adopt a classroom contributed to their success. With the Adopt a Classroom, students were more engaged with new and meaningful stations in both math and reading that I would not have bought with my personal money. Thank you!

This grant allowed me to purchase a classroom set of novels – a new novel that kids didn’t know. Having a new book to read inspired students, and they felt valued that someone was willing to provide money for us to do this. I know that it shouldn’t make a difference that the books were new – but it did. They were more positive as we approached the reading.

I have been the lucky recipient of a Leaf Grant for a couple years. It is a wonderful gift that keeps on giving. I benefit and so do all my students. Sometimes I have used it to support curriculum and other times it is a great resource as many students in our district show up with few if any supplies. Along with the money I spend from my own, I am able to do a bit extra thanks to these generous supporters. Rewarding students for achievement is another fun way I have used the my Leaf Grant, they all love Jolly Ranchers.

I have LOVED the Adopt a Classroom Program. I spend hundreds of dollars a year on my students, and I feel appreciated and acknowledged by having the flexibility of purchasing what I need for my classroom. I feel trusted and validated as a professional! The process is easy, just filling out a form of our needs. THANK YOU!

This year I used the Adopt A Classroom Grand to purchase trumpet and trombone mutes. These are extra accessories which are used in many concert band and jazz ensemble pieces. Although I ask students to purchase their own mutes many use school instruments or are unable to afford them. Thank you for the opportunity to provide these tools to better meet the performance needs of my students!

Most of my students come to school without school supplies and I typically pay hundreds of dollars out of my own pocket to supply the basics to my students such as calculators, pencils, folders and notebooks to students who otherwise sit in class without these materials and use this as a reason to not participate/complete their school work. Thanks to the leaf grant, three E/BD classrooms were supplied with school supplies for our students that come without materials. This demonstrates to the students someone cares about them enough to supply what they need in order for them to come and learn. The teachers and students are very thankful to what this grant supplied us with!

The Adopt a Classroom grant that I received for my classroom this past fall was fantastic! We used the $250.00 to purchase books and relevant maps/puzzles for our classroom. The lending library that has been created, is a great addition to my Social Studies/Career Exploration classroom! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for this program. We stretched the money in many ways to get the most books and supplies to assist this new project. Have a great day and keep up the great work and program!

My class helped me in the process of picking out the supplies we needed and wanted. When they arrived in the huge box my class said it was like opening up a birthday present! They took such great care of the items and felt ownership in the whole process!!

I cannot thank the LEAF Adopt a Classroom Project enough for the support you gave our music classroom this year at Clearview. I have not had a Music budget for several years now so the $250 purchased mallets, snare drum brushes, triangle holders, a book about B.B. King on Blues and folk dance music with instruction booklet that all students are enjoying. Thank you for helping us get these items that help our students have a “hands on ” approach to music making. They are so appreciative and eager to sing, play and create.

This is my second year of receiving a Leaf Adopt a Classroom grant. What a wonderful program! Last year I was able to purchase a large number of books for my classroom library. I teach at Discovery where we have a very diverse population. I need to have high interest books at all levels of reading to meet the needs of my English Language Learners as well as my high achieving students. This year I was able to purchase a better system to store the books in my room so that students can check out and return the books with ease. I know that the Leaf Grant has helped increase outside of school reading for my students as I allow them to take books home. Thank you so much!

Thank you to everyone for collaborating with LEAF, and supporting education. With this grant I bought Spanish books for my classroom and binders for each of my students. It has been so great to have more books available to the students in Spanish. We have really enjoyed them. I have used the binders all year long and they have been very helpful. THANK YOU!

My Career and Technical Education Program was the grateful recipient of a $250 grant for school supplies through the LEAF Adopt a Classroom Project. Supplies purchases included highlighters, markers, labels, calculators, and other much needed supplies. The amount of money provided will help keep my program stocked with supplies for the next several years. School budgets have been downsized and basic needs for running a classroom seem to have been hit the hardest. My students and I appreciate the support that we received from our business sponsor and would really encourage other businesses to become a part of the LEAF process to help other classrooms provide these needed supplies. Thank you for believing in the educational process of helping our young adults achieve success through programs like LEAF! The LEAF grant money was great. I was able to purchase puzzles, reading and math manipulatives, and games for our kindergarten classroom. One of the items we were able to purchase was magna-tiles. They are building type blocks that can be used to build 3D shapes. These blocks allow math, science and creativity to be used together. The students love them. They are used often in our class. The students were so excited to get the new things for our classroom.

With my LEAF Adopt a Classroom Grant, I was able to purchase a Algebra 1 Versatiles set. It allows my students to do math in a hands on manner. The students enjoy doing something different every once in a while and the VersaTiles set works well for this. Some student even ask when we are doing the tiles again.

I am a licensed school nurse for District 742. My assignment includes Talahi and Oak Hill Elementary Schools. The Adopt a Classroom Project money was used to purchase items for Talahi. (The Oak Hill PTA typically donates money to the Health Office and other donations at Oak Hill allowed me to use the monies at Talahi.) This money was used to purchase elastic waist sweat pants in various sizes and muted “unisex” colors and assorted sizes of male and female underwear. This allowed the Health Office staff to offer kids a quick change of clothing when a situation occurred that required a change of clothing. (Less time digging through boxes looking for something appropriate.) Less time was lost from the classroom, and the Health Office staff could attend to others in more “urgent” need of care. The sweat pants “blend in” and it was less obvious the kids had on clothes form school. Self esteem preserved. Parents were able to remain at work. Kids could remain at school. We ask for the clothing be washed and returned to school. (That does happen on occasion.) This simple purchase was a huge help to us in the Talahi Health Office! Thanks for asking and thanks for all you do for the kids in St. Cloud schools.

The money donated to the South Office Staff greatly benefited our students in myriad ways. The money enabled us to reach all students on a macro level and many on the micro. We provided trapper keepers, school supplies, socks, mittens and hats for students who came to school unprepared for the weather and without family resources to attain them. Additionally, we provided materials to the counselors for providing social skills training to all sixth graders through the classroom. Thank you so much for providing us with this funding.

I was very thankful to get my grant this year. I was able to buy sets of 3 different novels for my students. It was great to be able to have new books, and I know the kids appreciated it too. It was really nice to supplement the small budget I had available. The program is very beneficial and I really appreciated receiving the grant! Thanks for your help with this!

I have been greatly blessed by the LEAF organization in the past two years. I applied for and received a classroom materials grant that helped me purchase 3 IPads for my classroom. These have proven to be valuable assets in my instruction. Students have used them for practice and review of reading and math skills and also for creating stories that fulfill a media literacy first grade standard. Students are highly motivated to use the IPads and highly engaged with the tasks on them. Secondly, I was fortunate to receive a $250 classroom grant this year. I purchased a web-based reading program with leveled digital books that were read daily in my instructional guided reading groups. The program included comprehension activities that related well to the format of standardized testing. My students’ reading and math scores were very good this year, showing strong increases and levels meeting or exceeding national norms. Having these instructional tools made a great difference!! School monies are designated for specific uses, so access to purchase instructional materials for our classrooms is virtually non-existent. Without the financial support of LEAF, these purchases would not have happened for me nor impacted my students. Thanks so much for your hard work and commitment to creating these opportunities for District 742 students!! Forever thankful.

The $250 grant I received was used to purchase an ipad for use in our classroom. With the many free apps I was able to obtain, I was able to provide extensions and remediations for MANY students. Many of the apps I downloaded were games which went right along with our classroom learning and which could be used in a station activity for 4 children at a time. The ipad was never sitting idle and will be used again next year for many more students! Thank you!

THANK YOU LEAF!! I am fortunate to have received a Chromebook this year for my classroom due to LEAF! That gift has been extremely valuable to the learning in my classroom. Students use it daily to research our Social Studies topics allowing for inquiry driven learning. The additional technology has increased engagement and the critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary for success in today’s world. As a teacher, I have been able to provide more learning options and better support individualized instruction as well. Tools such as these are vital to the success of all learners in our classrooms. I am extremely grateful for the support that LEAF has provided for my classroom and all of its learners! THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN!

To Whom It May Concern, In the fall of 2013, my kindergarten class received a $250.00 Grant. I used the grant to purchase multiple copies of books for our listen to read center. These books have benefitted students by providing them with vocabulary rich reading materials, being read by fluent and expressive readers. They have been able to listen to the stories multiple times increasing their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Because they LOVED the stories, they have taken excellent care of the books and the books will be available to future students. The books in the listening center have also benefitted the students by allowing them to be independent, freeing up me to provide guided reading and intervention to small groups and individual students. Thanks to the LEAF grant, we have had a very successful year. Students have had accelerated growth on MAP assessments. Non-readers have become readers! Sincerely.

I was lucky enough to receive a LEAF grant this year for my classroom, and it really made a difference! One of the things I purchased was some motivational and math posters to hang in my room. Since I was new to Tech this year, these helped define the space as a math room. My favorite poster is one that says, “Just because something is difficult doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, it means you should try HARDER.” I point to it all the time and remind students to keep trying. I also bought a carton of tissues to use in the room. It seems so minor, but being able to have a box out for the students, especially during this almost-endless winter, was so helpful. It would have cost a lot of my personal money to keep tissue in my room. Finally, I bought some scientific calculators. I have many lower-income students in my classes, and there are several that do not have a good calculator. It has helped a lot for them to be able to borrow one of the classroom set to use in class. I really appreciate the LEAF grant!

Hi Bruce & LEAF team, I was pleasantly surprised to receive on of the LEAF grants this year. The money helped me purchase countless books for my classroom! Many students enjoyed copies of Divergent, Matched, Maze Runner, Harry Potter and City of Ember to name just a few. I look forward to using them for years to come. I also used a small amount of the grant to help support the many items I found I needed as the school year went on. Thank you!

The LEAF grant helped us to purchase materials for more hands on projects than our school budget would allow. One of the projects was designing t-shirts to encourage others to be drug free. The t-shirts said “My Natural High Is…” and on the back they designed their own picture showing what their natural high is.

My LEAF grant went for a Chromebook for student use. The Chromebook was used every day by many students. Students worked math activities, researched topics, and keyboarded writing projects. When our class was gone for a day the Chromebook was borrowed to another classroom for use. Students were motivated to work on the Chromebook and this increased their level of achievement.

The LEAF Adopt a Classroom Project was great this year. It allowed me to purchase supplies for my student that usually come out of my pocket or are not available at all. Because of this funding I was able to ensure all my students had basic supplies even at the end of the year. Thank you!!!!

Read News & History Report To The Community And Awards Reception
The LEAF Board recognizes that we would be unable to fulfill our Mission of supporting District 742 activities and academics without the contributions of many volunteers as well as generous charitable donations. In November of 2004, the Annual LEAF Appreciation Reception and Awards Recognition was begun to recognize the people who have made special contributions to LEAF and the District 742 activities program through their tireless service or philanthropic contributions. It is also a time for LEAF to report to the community how their generous donations have been used in the past year.
The first LEAF Appreciation Reception was held in the home of Steve and Paulette Schwegman. In 2005 and 2006, the event was moved to the Paramount Theatre and held in conjunction with a scheduled performance at the Theatre. Invited guest enjoy Hors D’oeuvres and refreshments followed by an awards program. In the fall of 2008, the venue was changed to Tech or Apollo – whichever school is performing a Fall Musical (they used to rotate). Following the recognition, guests are invited to attend the Fall Musical Performance.
The event moved to the St. Cloud Country Club in 2015, where it has stayed except for the two COVID years of 2021 & 2022.

LEAF will accept funding applications for student activities which conform to the District definition and philosophy. Funds may be granted to existing or proposed new programs, as well as to help cover singular, unanticipated costs associated with a student activity.
Funding will target a broad range of student activities programs or interests. Consideration will be given to activities which enhance learning, develop personal confidence and leadership skills, and promote cooperation. Programs and activities which are creative and innovative will be viewed favorably, as will those which include parental and/or other adult involvement and which benefit the larger community.
Restrictions:
LEAF will restrict funding to District 742 students and officially sponsored student activities.
LEAF funding is intended to supplement or enhance, not replace other sources of funds.
LEAF will not make grants that deal with safety issues as these should be dealt with through District funding.
LEAF will not fund requests for facility improvements, although requests for equipment procurement will be considered.

LEAF Grant Process:
LEAF utilizes an online grant application process. This makes the process easier and more efficient for everyone involved as well as providing an archive for Grant Applications. The site Administrator is Peggy Carlson, LEAF's Grants Administrator. Please direct all questions to her at cnpc747@tds.net . She is also willing to conduct brief onsite training sessions at your school.
Creating An Account:
The registration process has multiple steps which must be completed before you can actually access a Grant Application Form. BE AWARE using the browser’s back button will delete your registration information. After completing all the required registration information, you will be asked to create a permanent password.
Application Notes:
Once you arrive at the “Apply” page, you can access either the Academic or Activities Grant Form. Please make sure you are using the correct Grant Application Form.
Please read all instructions carefully. Especially those for #11 Administrator Email*. Entries will auto-save.
All fields with an * must be completed in order for you to submit your grant application. The Excel Budget Form has two pages. Excel Budget Page 2 is for listing supplies, you must complete both Budget pages.
Contingency Grants:
The Contingency Grant process has changed. Applicants must fill out a Contingency Grant Application Form. Contingency Grant Application Forms are now part of the FOUNDANT platform, but can only be accessed with special code. A Contingency Grant request must be for a project whose funding need arose after the most recent funding round closed and is needed prior to the subsequent funding round. The initial request must be made by contacting LEAF's Executive Director at 320-281-6581 or info@leaf742.org . If the request meets the criteria for Contingency Funding, the LEAF Executive Director will forward the request to the LEAF Grant Administrator who will then provide the grantee with the appropriate access code. An administrator’s recommendation is now part of the Contingency Grant Application.

You can make a difference right here in District 742
Do you shop at Kohl’s? Have you ever received Kohl’s Cash ? How many times has your Kohl’s Cash certificate expired because you just didn’t need to use it? On any given night there are more than 300 homeless students in ISD 742. Imagine not having a warm coat, boots, a hat, gloves, underwear or socks. Homeless Students Fund can use those Kohl’s Cash certificates to purchase much needed items for our district’s homeless students and their families. Next time you receive Kohl’s Cash and don’t need to use it or decide someone needs it more than you do you can:
Email your Kohl’s Cash Number: , Pin: , and Valid: dates to info@leaf742.org
Forward your Kohl’s Cash email to info@leaf742.org
Mail your Kohl’s Cash certificates to LEAF (address below)

Immersion Program (resricted) LEAF Grants: History
LEAF has tracked spring and fall cycle endowed funds grant since 1996, when LEAF began giving activities grants. In 2009, when LEAF expanded our focus to include all academics, activities, arts and athletic programs, Academic Fund grants were added to the Activities grants listing.
Beginning with the 2022 fiscal year, we will list ALL grants, not just endowed fund grants, given by LEAF throughout the school year. This will include ongoing updates for endowed fund grants, but also other LEAF grants as appropriate. Grant totals for certain funds (Homeless, PAKRAT, PAKCAT, Adopt a Classroom, Activities Participation, School Lunch program, and scholarships) will be provided at the end of each quarter.

Madison Elementary is looking to add innovation to their physical education learning experience through the addition of the LU Interactive Playground. The Lu is an interactive projection and computer system that uses different games and activities to allow students to immerse themselves in the physical activity while making it fun and educational. The Lu is cross curricular with activities that focus on all academic and physical education content areas. The Lu will also help incorporate social emotional learning and mindfulness strategies in ways that were not possible before with our students. The Lu will be used in physical education classes as well as with individual classroom learning opportunities. This will give our students the chance for increased physical activity times throughout the year. Please consider helping our Madison kids become healthier, smarter, happier students, by donating toward the Lu Interactive Playground project!

Learn more Activities Participation Fund
The purpose of the Activities Participation Fund is to “Provide assistance to individual students who would otherwise be unable (or would face significant hardship) to participate in the student activities program due to their economic circumstances” . LEAF recognizes the inherent value of participation in the organized student activities programs and seeks to support low-income students who want to participate.
The fund seeks to help disadvantaged youth participate in the student activities programs in District 742 by covering some of the costs for physicals, essential equipment for participation, transportation and other costs directly related to individual student participation. The fund helps students who want to participate at Apollo High School, Tech High School, Kennedy Community School, North Middle School and South Middle School.

Donate Adopt A Classroom
The District 742 Local Education & Activities Foundation kicks off our Adopt-A-Classroom Project each Fall! LEAF’s goal is to connect businesses, individuals and groups to specific classrooms to help provide needed supplies that the District is unable to fund. Supporters can “adopt” a classroom (Early Education, Elementary, Junior High or Senior High) by making a tax-deductible $250 contribution for the needed classroom supplies. (You can, of course, adopt more than one classroom)!
Currently, teachers often spend hundreds of dollars to provide basic supplies for classroom use. From basics such as permanent markers, pencils, notebooks and clean clothes for elementary children, to the more specialized items like sheet music, science kits, dry ice and mice for snake food; our teachers spend their own money to help insure a quality educational experience.
"Businesses, individuals, grand-parents or groups can choose to adopt a specific classroom at a specific school, or make a $250 donation to LEAF and allow LEAF to choose a classroom randomly from those classrooms that apply for help. 100% of all proceeds will go directly to the participating classrooms!

Hans was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and moved to St. Cloud with his family when he was 3 years old. Except for two years spent in Folsom, California, during his early teen years, he grew up in St. Cloud and graduated from Tech High School in 2020. During his time at Tech, he was involved in extra-curricular activities such as Knowledge Bowl, the Math Team, golf, and basketball. Hans was only five weeks into his freshman year at UCLA when he died from severe injuries due to a tragic fall on October 24, 2020. He was a “diamond in the rough” – a typical teenager on the outside but with many wonderful qualities on the inside. Hans was very musical, inquisitive, compassionate, inclusive, had the rare trait of never speaking ill of anyone else, had strong drive and determination to succeed, was unafraid, and had a gift for building community wherever he went. Hans loved learning and was thrilled to be going to the university of his dreams. He packed a lot of wonderful experiences and accomplishments into his 18 years of life. Hans will be greatly missed by so many, but left a great legacy and a huge number of memories for his community to treasure.

“We will always be thankful to District 742 for providing our children with a good education, and we are strong believers that extra-curricular activities are very important to a well-rounded education. When we planned our will, we felt it important that we leave funds to our favorite charities. LEAF has been one of our favorites since 1993. Therefore, we have named LEAF as a recipient of a gift in our will”.

PAKCAT Joins PAKRAT!
Who says CATS and RATS can’t work together?
Since 2011, LEAF has been supporting a unique child literacy and parent involvement program called PAKRAT (P arent A nd K ids R eading A -lot T ogether) in our preschool through grade 3 classrooms, and during the summertime through the PAKRAT Bus and summertime Read & Roll Program. The PAKRAT program has been so successful that LEAF was recently approached to begin a math literacy program similar to the PAKRAT program.
After considerable study and work with District 742 administration, LEAF applied for and received a $22,350 grant from the Morgan Family Foundation to run a PAKCAT (P artners A nd K ids C ounting A -lot T ogether) pilot program for 600 preschool students during the 2019-20 school year and the Summer PAKRAT/PAKCAT Bus program in 2020. At the same time, the Richard M. Schluze Family Foundation (Best Buy) awarded LEAF $21,000 for additional PAKRAT books. These generous grants, along with other individual donations, will help LEAF support the efforts of District 742 staff in building reading and math literacy in our youngest learners!

Since 2011, LEAF has been supporting the P artners A nd K ids R eading A -lot T ogether (PAKRAT) program in our District 742 elementary schools. PAKRAT provides books to all preschool through grade 3 students in District 742.
PAKRAT has been funded with LEAF grants as well as generous grants given to LEAF from the Bernick’s Foundation, The Morgan Family Foundation and the Otto Bremer Foundation. As part of the program, students take a book home to read with a parent/guardian each evening and then return the book, along with a brief worksheet about the book to their classroom teacher the next day.

Roll & Read PAKRAT Bus
The Summer Rotary Club/LEAF/District 742 PAKRAT Roll & Read Program provides a “library on wheels” during the summer months and serves as an extension of the school year PAKRAT program.
A Brief PAKRAT History
In 2013, under the leadership of Sara Martini and Beth Lovdahl and with grants from LEAF, the PAKRAT program was expanded to a Summer Roll and Read Program for the Talahi Elementary attendance area. Each week, the Roll & Read school bus made stops throughout the Talahi attendance area, drawing students from virtually every elementary school in District 742! In 2014, the Otto Bremer Foundation grant helped support the Summer Roll & Read PAKRAT program with additional books.
Based on Richard Allington’s research which indicates that up to 85% of the achievement gap can be attributed to the “summer slide” when many students have little access to quality reading materials, the Roll and Read program provides all students access to these quality reading materials on a weekly basis throughout the summer. The pilot program in the Talahi attendance area was a great success and in 2015 with the help of a $15,000 gift from the St. Cloud Rotary Club, an additional $10,000 grant from LEAF and support from District 742, the Summer PAKRAT Read and Roll Program was expanded into ALL District 742 Elementary School attendance areas runs 3 days per week! The Kiwanis Club of St. Cloud was added as a sponsor for the 2016 Summer Roll and Read program!
With help of a $25,000 anonymous donation to the PAKRAT Program in the Fall of 2016 for more quality books, the 2016-17 school year was another great year for student literacy and parent involvement through the PAKRAT Program. During the 2016-17 school year, 3,478 students in preschool through grade 3 read a total of 123,214 books through the PAKRAT Program!
During the summer of 2017, 2,132 children checked out 6,255 books from the PAKRAT Bus over the 7-week summer PAKRAT Roll & Read Program! LEAF thanks the many teachers who support student literacy by working with the PAKRAT school-year program and the District staff that ride the summer PAKRAT Bus to bring quality books to all District 742 students!

* – indicates deceased Why Support LEAF?
Why does LEAF do it? Why do our donors support public education? Why do our teachers work so hard to provide a quality educational experience for all learners? We think the picture on our front banner of this article explains it all! We do it for the kids who will someday be the leaders of our community, state, and nation! (Thanks to Pam Stang’s Kindergarten class at Westwood elementary!) Below, you will read quotes from some of our generous donors addressing why they support LEAF and you’ll read quotes from our teachers addressing why they teach! We thank all our donors for their generous support, and we thank all our district 742 teachers for what they do everyday!
Check out “Why I give to LEAF? ” and “Why do I teach? ” below.
Why do I give to LEAF?
Tara and Ben Winchester “We support public education because we want all children to not only make good choices but HAVE good choices. We know that a strong and equitable public education is the foundation upon which our society and democracy is built, and we cannot imagine a future without it.”
Pat & Cathy Mullen “Pat and I know that it is essential to support public education because we appreciate the great work that teachers did for our children and know that teachers and programs deserve the support to care for all of “our” kids.”
Beth & Anthony Fenstad “Strong districts support not only the continuation but also the growth of healthy, equitable programming for all students across the district. As an parent, advisor, and educator in 742, I witness LEAF’s generosity firsthand; I am extremely proud to be a part of a strong district with so many generous, future-focused community members behind it.”
Joe Mullen “Except perhaps for primary healthcare, nothing a society can do to better itself is more important than education, and especially education of our youth. Education stimulates advancements in every field, opens doors for children of all talent levels and, when it results in life-long learning, it can also promote healthy emotional balance.”
Jim & Mary Michaud “Mary and I believe deeply in public education. Our support didn’t end just because we retired.”
Al Dahgren, Owner of Once Upon A Child Clothing Store “As a current member of the board of education I donate to LEAF. I am able to see firsthand how LEAF donations are put to good use. 742 has an exceptional team of educators and great educational programming. LEAF donations help our educators, filling in where funding is short, accelerating learning and improving performance. LEAF is synonymous with improved educational and extracurricular experiences.”
Peggy Carlson & Chuck Nielsen “I am thankful every day for the excellent education that I received as a student in ISD 742; donating is my way of giving back to the district that provided me with that education. My grandchildren were students/athletes in ISD 742 for most of their 13 school years; I donate to help provide that same quality education and activity opportunities to other children. “
Janna & Mike LaFountaine “We donate because we believe in the value of public education and in particular ALL the extracurricular activities that LEAF supports!”
Gary & Jane Marsden “The American Dream….that all children, regardless of their family and social background, should have a decent chance to improve their lot in life…is tied to education. Gary (from Putnam’s book ..Our Kids.. “
North Risk Partners Insurance Agency “North Risk Partners is a proud sponsor of LEAF and the educational opportunities LEAF is able to provide for students regardless of background. It is rewarding seeing our dollars put to great-use in the community through extra-curricular activities, grants, and support for faculty to provide quality learning experiences for all students.”
Karel & Mike Helgeson “In 1968, my world was enlarged by meeting Methodists at Tech” (Karel Helgeson Class of 1970). “I valued the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and experiences which broadened my world view.” (Mike Helgeson Tech Class of 1970)
Jim O’Neill “I donate because I taught for 42 years and know how difficult it can be at times to furnish materials for the classroom while facing other personal expenses in a job that requires a great deal and does not pay accordingly.”
Diane Moeller “I give to public education for many reasons. First of all it is the equalizer to promote our democracy. Any support we can give it to that end, is an investment in everyone’s future. Secondly, some students need more support to be a part of activities, or to get additional support for their academic progress. LEAF is a wonderful way to support students directly. Finally, I was blessed to be able to serve a 44-year career in public education, and I want to give back in ways I am able.”
Dr. John Weitz “Education is the key to the whole shabang”
Ginny & Jim Bisek “As former educators, we both know that reaching every student is important. Giving to LEAF helps the teachers and students reach their goals whether it’s in the classroom or in extracurricular activities.”
Dan Anderson, State Farm Agency “My office team gets to pick our donations that we give each year. LEAF has been chosen for multiple years as we see the benefit in providing resources to our younger generation that they may not get without our help.”
Pat Welter, Retired Educator “I have spent many years of my life as an educator in public education and donating in support of public education. I believe that education, and specifically quality public education, is the most important way to provide all kids, regardless of origin, a fair start in life. It is a critical foundation stone of the American Dream and we must support it!”
Why do I teach?
Jill Fussy, Lincoln Elementary “Sharing my love of math with students at the elementary level is building our next generation mathematicians, scientists, trades workers, engineers, and all-around knowledgeable citizens. I love being part of the future!”
Ericka Kinzer, Madison Elementary “I teach so that all students have a place that they feel they belong and that they can be successful.”

Geri Swanson, Clearview Elementary “I teach because of the sheer joy it gives me to watch a curious child learn something new, no better feeling in the world! We are helping to shape the next generation.”
Susan Williams, Retired Educator “One of my favorites: Teachers don’t teach for the income they teach for the outcome.”
Rebecca Marohl, Tech High School “I teach because I love that every day is a different day, no two days are ever the same. I love the joy the students bring me when I walk into a room and they say “hello” or shout out, “Ms. Marohl!”
Amy Zander, Kennedy Community School “I teach because I believe I can make a difference in our youth by helping them grow into caring, compassionate, people!”
