Seeing the Impact of LEAF Firsthand

June 12, 2026

This year LEAF is featuring blogs from our Board members and volunteers sharing why they give their time and talents in service to District 742 students. Today’s blog is from Justin Skaalerud, a member of our LEAF Board.

I am honored to serve as the Principal of Apollo High School, to have been a teacher and coach, and to be the parent of a three-sport Apollo student-athlete. In each of those roles, I have seen firsthand the difference LEAF makes in the lives of our ISD 742 students.

LEAF creates opportunities for students that go far beyond the classroom. Whether it is supporting academics, athletics, activities, fine arts, or student needs, LEAF helps provide experiences that many students may not otherwise have access to. Those opportunities help students discover their passions, build confidence, and create connections that stay with them long after graduation.

As Principal of Apollo High School, I see every day how much our students gain when a community believes in them. LEAF is a powerful example of our community stepping up to invest in students and their futures. The impact is real, and it reaches students from every background and every school in our district.

As a former coach, I saw how important it is for students to feel connected to their school and activities. Some of the greatest growth happens outside the classroom through teamwork, leadership, and relationships with mentors and peers. LEAF’s support helps make those experiences possible for more students across District 742.

As a parent, I have watched my own child benefit from being involved in school activities and athletics. The lessons learned through participation teach resilience, commitment, accountability, and pride. Those experiences shape students into strong young adults.

I am grateful for the volunteers, donors, and board members who give their time and talents to support LEAF’s mission. Your commitment makes a lasting difference for students across ISD 742, and Apollo High School is proud to be part of that work.
