From Then to Now: How School Experiences Shape a Lifetime

May 31, 2026

This year LEAF is featuring blogs from our Board members and volunteers sharing why they give their time and talents in service to District 742 students. Today’s blog is from Elise Weiner, a member of our LEAF Board.

Recently, I had the joy of reconnecting with a group of high school classmates as we began planning our 50th—yes, 50th—class reunion. As we sat together, it felt like no time had passed at all. Yet somehow, five decades have come and gone in the blink of an eye.

We found ourselves reminiscing about our school days—those formative years filled with learning, laughter, and discovery. And as the conversation unfolded, I began to reflect more deeply on just how much those experiences shaped the person I am today.

The Power of Opportunity

During my K–12 years, I was fortunate to have access to a wide range of opportunities. Beyond core academic classes, I explored music, DECA, basketball, softball, cheerleading, driver’s education, home economics, and shop. Each experience added something meaningful to my growth—building confidence, discipline, curiosity, and a sense of direction.

Those opportunities didn’t just fill my schedule—they shaped my future. They inspired me to attend college, pursue a degree in accounting, and ultimately led to a fulfilling career of nearly 45 years as a CPA.

Looking back, I can say with certainty: without those experiences, my path may have looked very different.

Then vs. Now

One thing that stands out when comparing today’s educational landscape to that of 50 years ago is accessibility. Many of the activities and programs I participated in were available at little to no cost. Even families on tight budgets, like mine, could still say “yes” to these opportunities.

Today, that’s not always the case.

Extracurricular activities—so vital to a child’s development—are often no longer fully funded by school budgets. Fees for participation, equipment, and travel can create barriers for families who want the best for their children but struggle to cover these additional costs.

Bridging the Gap

This is where organizations like LEAF make a profound difference.

By raising funds to support scholarships, no-fee activities, and enriching programs, LEAF helps ensure that all students—regardless of financial circumstances—have access to the same kinds of opportunities that once helped shape students like me.

Because academics and activities are not separate—they work hand in hand to build well-rounded, confident, and capable individuals.

Investing in the Next 50 Years

As I think about our upcoming reunion and the journeys we’ve all taken, I can’t help but feel grateful for the foundation we were given. It’s my hope that today’s students will one day gather, just as we are, and reflect on the opportunities that helped guide their lives.

With the continued support of donors and advocates, organizations like LEAF can ensure that today’s children have the same chance to explore, grow, and succeed.

And perhaps, 50 years from now, they too will look back and recognize those experiences as the beginning of something extraordinary.
