Embraced or Tolerated? The Difference Students Feel Every Day

April 30, 2025

There’s a quiet wisdom in this quote by S. Brown of @teachfortheculture: “Students know when they’re embraced vs. when they are just tolerated.” It speaks to something every student intuitively understands, even if they can’t always put it into words.

In every classroom, school hallway, or college office, the environment we create sends a message. When students are embraced, they feel seen, heard, and valued—not just for their academic performance, but for who they are. They feel safe asking questions, sharing their ideas, and showing up authentically.

On the flip side, being merely tolerated breeds disconnection. It shows up in subtle dismissals, lack of engagement, or a tone that says, “You’re only welcome here if you conform.” Over time, that sense of being “put up with” rather than genuinely welcomed erodes confidence and belonging.

Educators, mentors, and institutions must reflect on how their actions—big and small—shape the emotional climate. Creating a space of true inclusion isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about consistent, meaningful human connection. When students feel embraced, they flourish. And when they flourish, everyone benefits.

District 742’s core values showcase inclusion and connection throughout the list. That makes us #742proud!
